Tips on Sleeping Better
They say that practice makes perfect, but did you know that applies to sleep too?
It’s important to have good sleep habits, so here are some tips to help you practice sleeping better.
Why Do Good Sleep Habits Matter?
We all need sleep. Some need more and others less, but we all need it. Sleep is what helps us wake up in the morning, think clearly as we go about our day, focus on what we’re working on, and feel good while we’re doing it. Without sleep, the whole day just feels worse.
But the key to healthy sleep is developing healthy sleep habits.
If you just jump into bed and scroll Reddit for an hour and a half before falling asleep, you could probably stand to pick up some better sleep habits.
Tips On Sleeping Better
Your day is only as good as your habits. And those habits include your sleep routine.
If you’re not getting the sleep you need, try to develop some better sleep habits that’ll help you now and in the future.
Don’t eat too late - When you eat, your body starts digesting your food immediately. Meaning your stomach starts making stomach acid to break down your food. When you lay down to go to sleep, everything in your body shifts sideways. That includes the stomach acid digesting your food. So instead of digestion happening at the bottom of your stomach, it’s happening all along the back of it. Which means there’s more stomach acid near your throat about to give you heartburn.
And heartburn makes sleeping uncomfortable.
Make sure you don’t eat for several hours before you go to bed so your body can do most of the digestion before you lay down.
Get in the right headspace - Stress keeps a lot of people awake. But doing something to relax your brain can help. Put away your phone an hour or two before officially going to bed to avoid the blue light that stimulates your brain. Listen to an ASMR podcast or some comforting instrumental music if that helps you calm down. You can even pick up a coloring book. Whatever you need to do to calm down and forget about tomorrow for a bit.
Create a comfortable space - You’ll sleep best in a place that makes you feel comfortable. And most people feel comfortable when their space is clean, smells good, and isn’t too noisy. So make your space comfortable for you. That may mean picking up the dirty laundry. It may also mean picking up an essential oil diffuser, or it may mean changing your sheets more often.
Avoid stimulants - Caffeine is meant for waking you up in the morning, not keeping you going throughout your day. If it’s late and you’re still drinking coffee or energy drinks, you’re going to experience some sleep problems. That’s just how it works.
Avoid naps - Lastly, you may be tempted to catch some Zzzs during a break during the day, but try not to. Although naps are super tempting, they normally put you in a funk for the rest of the day and make it harder to fall asleep at night. Just do your best to work through it and go to bed early if you can.
