How Lack of Sleep Affects Us

Have you ever felt the effects from a lack of sleep? Probably.

Who hasn’t?

But do you know how serious those effects can be over the long-run?

You Need Sleep: End Of Discussion

A lot of people think they can skip out on sleep. But we’ll tell you right now that you can’t.

Period.

Sure, teChNicAllY you get away with not sleeping enough for a day, but you’ll still notice a lot of negative side effects from doing so immediately.

And if you keep missing out on sleep, you’ll start seeing some major health problems.

Effects From Lack Of Sleep

Here’s what happens when you don’t get the sleep you need.

You start to feel irritable - Has something small ever felt like a bigger deal than it really was? Like forgetting your phone when going to the bathroom or a wet sock or finding out you’re out of ice cream. When you’re running low on sleep those small inconveniences will feel like even bigger things and you’ll feel either angrier or sadder throughout your day.

You become more vulnerable to sickness - Even though sleep feels like a long break to you, your body actually does a lot of work healing and repairing throughout the night. That’s part of why you feel so much better when you wake up. But if you don’t get enough sleep, your body doesn’t have time to fix itself. Which means you’re more likely to get sick or injured. Or just feel terrible. Especially if you skip out on sleep for a long time.

You start having a hard time functioning - It’s always harder to focus on what you’re doing or remembering what you have to do whenever you’re running low on sleep. If you’re going to cut down on sleep, try to not fill up your schedule the next day so you can take it easy.

You might even experience some health problems - Weight gain, increased blood pressure, and an increased risk for diabetes are all associated with a long-term lack of sleep. These are real medical issues that can cause a lot of problems down the road.

Tips For Getting Better Sleep

If you want to get more sleep, give some of these a try.

Prioritize your schedule - There are only 24 hours in a day, nothing we can do about that. You can only do so much before the day is over. Accept that reality, set a schedule that includes a bedtime, then stick to it. Going without sleep isn’t going to help you out in the long-run.

Give yourself some space - Not everyone lives in a large home. We know this. But try your best to use your sleep space for sleeping and use the rest of your home for everything else. People tend to have a hard time sleeping when their bed doubles as a work-from-home desk, a laundry collector, and a kitchen table.

Practice sleep good hygiene - Brush your teeth, regularly wash your sheets, and take a shower (or at least wash your face). Good sleep hygiene will protect you from germs and bacteria while you sleep. It will also help train your brain to calm down. Even a small sleep routine that includes washing your face can trigger your brain to get into sleep mode.
